Welcome to the Washington Texas Historical Cemetery Association. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring and preserving the graves, headstones, artifacts, and grounds of the Washington Texas Historical Cemetery. Our mission is to ensure that the rich history of this cemetery is preserved for future generations. This website is designed to provide you with information about our organization and restoration efforts as they occur. We invite you to explore our site and learn more about the Washington Texas Historical Cemetery, work in progress, and plans for the future.
This 2.5 acre cemetery holds the remains of individuals from some of Washington, Texas oldest and most prominent families. To date, there are more than 60 known interments but it is likely more will be found as work progresses. The cemetery is currently overgrown and most of the headstones and crypts are in need of repair. We look forward to restoration of these artifacts as well as finding new treasures in the form of unknown graves, headstones, and artifacts.
The Washington Texas Historical Cemetery Association is a 501(c)(3) organization founded for the purpose of restoring, preserving, and maintaining our historic cemetery. Our Board of Directors and Members are dedicated to seeing that the cemetery becomes, and remains, a beautiful sanctuary honoring the legacies of those who came before us. Many members are either direct or familial descendants of those interred in this cemetery.
A second ground penetrating radar survey was conducted in the cleared area of the cemetery which identified over 150 potential unknown gravesites which were marked flags. Of course, mowing was impossible with all of the marking flags, so each was replaced with a stainless steel numbered disc. Each disc was secured close to the ground by a nine-inch stainless steel spike. That's quite a bit of work, but the weather was cool and the ground was soft.

The Washington Texas Historical Cemetery Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, receiving legal conservatorship of the cemetery by the Washington County, Texas District Court, 11 July 2024. A culvert was installed October 2024 at the Washington Cemetery Road and the first part of installing an access road into the cemetery has been done, which included removal of approximately 4800 square feet of dense brush. A ground-penetrating radar survey was conducted to ensure no unknown graves were loacted beneath the proposed road. No graves were found. The road can now be completed.
